Usui Reiki Symbols
Usui Reiki symbols are sacred and are to be kept confidential. They are only revealed to those who are about to be initiated into the Second or Third degree of Reiki. The reason for this is explained later in this article. However, it is possible to discuss their nature, how they work and their history while we continue to honor this trust.

The Reiki 'master' Symbol
Each of the four Reiki symbols has an accompanying Japanese mantra/phraze - frequently referred to as a jumon ('spell' or 'incantation'). In 'western' lineage Reiki this jumon is commonly used as the symbol's name.

The Distant Healing Symbol
The distant healing symbol can be translated to mean, "The Buddha in me reaches out to the Buddha in you to promote enlightenment and peace." I have also seen it translated as "The Christ in me reaches out to the Christ in you to promote enlightenment and peace."

Rose Reiki
In its simplest form, Reiki is the use of hands placed upon the body with the intent to bring about healing and willing for Reiki energy to flow.
Since there is no time and space to limit spirit, Reiki can operate without regard to limitations of space. A skilled Reiki practitioner can bring healing to a recipient regardless of distance.

Reiki
Reiki is an ancient art of natural healing, rediscovered in Japan by Dr Mikao Usui over one hundred years ago. It is a gentle but powerful ?hands-on? technique which brings wholeness to both recipient and practitioner. Reiki restores the natural balance of the body, providing deep relaxation and bringing a sense of peace and wellbeing. It is called Universal Life Energy because it draws upon the healing energy of the universe rather than the energy of the practitioner. Reiki heals the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual bodies. It complements the healing properties of all modalities including orthodox medicine, natural therapies such as herbs, aromatherapy and homoeopathy, massage, psychotherapy and others and can be given in conjunction with any other therapy or treatment. Reiki is not intrusive since the energy will pass through clothing, bandages, plaster casts or braces and the recipient remains clothed. The technique of Reiki can be used on animals, plants, buildings, cars, people and places - in fact you can use your Reiki in any situation you desire. To benefit from Reiki you need only be open and willing to receive the energy and to channel it.

Reiki symbols are Sanskrit-derived Japanese forms. Sanskrit is the mother-tongue of all other languages. It is the language of the Vedas, the oldest writings known to man. The Vedas say that Sanskrit is the language of the spirit world.

The symbol has a general meaning of: "No past, no present, no future" or it can have the meaning of "The Buddha in me contacts the Buddha in you".

The Distance symbol can, as its name implies, be used to send energies over a distance. Time and distance is no problem when using this Reiki symbol. Many practitioners consider Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen as the most useful and powerful symbol. The use of the symbol gives access to the "Akashic Records", the life records of each soul and can therefore be used in karmic healing. Trauma and other experiences from this life, previous or parallel lives that affect and mirror peoples' behaviors can be brought to light and released.

The power symbol and the mental/emotional symbol have important protective abilities. In many versions of the first degree attunement process, the power symbol is the only Reiki symbol planted in the hands. It's placed there in part because of the extensive protection it provides. It protects the healer from the client's personal energy, the client from the healer's personal energy, and the energy current from both the healer and client's personal energy.

I was already familiar with three of the meanings of these symbols as Buddhist terms. I was working with the interpretations of these terms for almost 20 years before ever hearing of Reiki. They are displayed in temples in Japan and the power symbol is used as a protective emblem. People do need to be attuned to Reiki before they can use these symbols to activate Reiki energy functions. These were not images and mandalas which were only revealed to initiates of Esoteric Buddhism. Though the use of these particular symbols to access healing energies is specific to Reiki and Reiki does not require belief or practice of any particular religion or philosophy.
